On Location in Vancouver
It’s been a quiet winter for me here in Whistler, so I’ve been spending a lot of time doing commercial photography in Vancouver. All the work has been on-location with studio type lighting. The biggest job so far has been working with Vancouver graphic designer Jung Shin who’s working on a series of re-vamped menus [...]
Loverboy Concert at the Whistler Olympic Plaza
Saturday night I got the chance to photograph my old high school favourite band, Loverboy, at the Whistler Olympic Plaza. Oddly enough, I was assigned this job by the builders of the covered plaza, Whistler’s Peak Ventures, who needed a shot of a concert that showed the large roof and that it was capable of [...]
Creative 5 Eclectic
Creative 5 Eclectic is a local event put on by my friend Stephen Vogler. It’s a combination open mic night and poetry reading, and is really a great opportunity to catch some local artist’s in action. Peter is at the mic, and Rajan Das on upright bass. Heather Paul gave a terrific spoken word performance. [...]
Araxi Longtable Dinners at North Arm Farm
Last year I had the opportunity to photograph the Outstanding in the Field North Arm Farm event. This year, Araxi has created their own series of dinners the Araxi Longtable Dinners at North Arm Farm, and have invited me back to photograph the events. Araxi Sous Chef Jim Pickwell samples some herbs at the North [...]
2011 Whistler Crankworx
July 22nd – Giant Slalom Tomas Slaveik rides to first place in the giant slalom race. Brian Lopes riding in the giant Slalom. Tech Stuff As with the Air Downhill, the weather was really poor and I had to drop in a lot of flash. The key light was on the same 12′ boom stand [...]
Ashley MacIsaac Canada Day Concert
Ashley MacIsaac put on a terrific Canada Day concert in Whistler’s new Olympic Plaza. Tech Stuff The close in shots were shot with my 70-200mm, which was a little short for this job, but since I wasn’t actually working this gig, I didn’t want to drag my big 300mm lens to the event. The shot [...]
Whistler Multicultural Festival
Whistler held it’s first Multicultural Festival this week, closing off Main Street, and throwing a huge party. It’s been a quiet start to summer, so I’ve taken to carrying my camera around, and just shooting what I see. When I was a news photographer, I never went anywhere without a camera, and that was a [...]
Cariboo Road Trip
Burned forest near Barierre Joyce and I took some time and went on a really nice road trip over the Duffy Lake road to Lillooet, on to Clinton, then Kamloops, and finally back home. Along the the Duffy Lake Road. The valley drops almost 1000 ft.into Cayoosh Creek. It’s one of those places you definitely [...]
St. Anthony’s Dunes
Jason Sheppard I finally arrived in Idaho to meet up with my fiend Jason and his buddies at the Sand Dunes in St. Anthony. They took me out and put on a great photo show. We had an epic bon fire that night, plying our Mormon neighbours with cheap tequila and potato vodka. Tech Stuff: [...]
Yellowstone Park
Grizzly Bear Checking my map, I realized that I was 100 miles from Yellowstone prk, so took a short detour through the park. Well worth the trip. A Bison and her calf walk around a geyser. The Old Faithful Lodge Tech Stuff For the picture of the Grizzly Bear, I used my old 300mm f/2.8 [...]
More of the Road Trip
Welcome to Idaho. Fuck the speed limit. Another delicious breakfast. Abandoned train station. Lima, Montana. My trip across the western United States had a melancholy feel to it. Most towns seem to have seen their best days a generation ago. Old drive-in restaurant. St. Anthony, Idaho. The Columbia River. Washington State. Tech Stuff: When I’m [...]
Idaho and Montana Road Trip
Thunder storm over Butte Montana The time between the Easter school break and the summer vacation in Whistler is known as the shoulder season. It’s when there’s nobody in the resort, and everybody’s hanging around waiting for the tourist season to start. Which is why I jumped at the chance to head down to St. [...]
Stock Photography sales for 2010
A picture of Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, that sold to a Japanese trade magazine for $55.43 These are a few of the stock photos I’ve sold this year. Early in my career, I spent two years assisting one of the top stock image photographers in Canada. It was a lot of fun, and times [...]

The Sani Pass
My Dad took us up the Sani Pass, which is the main southern access road into the Kingdom of Lesotho. Lesotho is a separate country that is actually completely inside South Africa. It’s a pretty desolate place, and all they seem to do is raise sheep and provide hydro electric power to South Africa. If [...]
Joyce in Jo’burb
Joyce flew in from Whistler for Christmas, and after three days of the Buzzard family goings on (Christmas lunches on the 24th, 25th, and 26th), we decided to pop up to Johannesburg for some peace and quiet. Joyce riding a WWII German 88mm antiaircraft gun, and about to get us thrown out the Johannesburg Military [...]
The Durban Club
A close family friend invited my father and to lunch at the Durban Club, the self declared final bastion of the British Empire. It’s an exclusive men’s club located in downtown Durban. The club has been operating since 1861, and has been in the current building since 1903. Arnold is my sister Joanne’s father-in-law. He [...]
The Blue Horizon Club
I had the pleasure of attending the retirement party for my father’s friend, Colin Govender, at the Blue Horizon Social Club. Colin was a shift supervisor at the chemical plant my Dad ran on the Natal South Coast. There was a terrible accident where a huge chemical reactor failed, and Colin crawled on his hands [...]
Burning the Sugar Cane Fields
Before the farms harvest the sugar cane, it’s burned to remove wide grass blades, or trash from the cane, leaving the bamboo like cane behind. This saves a lot of work for the cane cutter, and clears the area of snakes and rodents.
South African Sugar Farm
A worker climbs between two sugar cane haulers. This week I had the pleasure of touring the Rhodes sugar cane farm on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast. The owner, Craig Rhodes, and his father Chris were kind enough to let me have the run of the place for two days. It’s a large operation, with over 300 [...]
Some of the Locals
A couple of the locals around the Limpopo region, around Kruger Park. Nothing but rain and cold weather here in Durban, nothing much else to report.

Hippo on the bank of the Sabie River Hyena, near Lower Sabie Camp. This guy would make a Pit Bull look like a [...]
Kruger Park at Night
The Apartheid Museum is a must see. It’s a thought provoking place, and being a journalist for the tail end of, a bit of personal history as well. Above is a self portrait in the mirror display. This is a frighteningly realistic solitary confinement cell they had mocked up. It’s a lot smaller than it [...]
